Are orchestras too loud???

Please read this wonderful post by master teacher Ron LaFond: "Are orchestras too loud or are singers un-resonant?"

Usually! Few conductors are singers and are more interested in the orchestral sound. They think the instruments are louder because they are closer to them, forgetting that the singers are much further away. It is left then to technicians to balance in houses that use amplification.
G. Solti, I understand was the grandest offender in this.
